Bar Margaux, Melbourne: Why choose this French bar and brasserie?
Bar Margaux in Melbourne is a classy, old school, late night cocktail and wine bar, with a distinctly French menu.
Bar Margaux in Melbourne shows that not all bars have to be hip, gimmicky and trendy. This Melbourne bar has old school French class about it, although it feels it has come Paris via New York.
Bar Margaux is a basement bar on Lonsdale Street, and a deliberately discrete one at that. It is a late night bar, but not in the sense that it turns into a club. This is the sort of place where you can get lost in long, lingering discussions over cocktails or a glass of wine.

Bar Margaux food menu
The food menu unashamedly apes the classic French brasserie. Options include pasta printemps with asparagus, peas and garlic butter for $21. There’s also a steak frites with a 250g flank, red wine jus and frites for $39 – or duck frites with slow-cooked duck breast and frites for $42.
The most widely-admired option on the Bar Margaux menu, however, isn’t particularly French. The MGX Burger with cheese, bacon and frites costs $27, but it’s the secret recipe sauce that elevates it above the average burger.

Bar Margaux cocktails
The cocktails at Bar Margaux don’t try to do anything too wacky. The athol brose is simply Scotch whisky, honey and cream. You can also get a martini or a Manhattan.
Wines have an Australian bent, including a Soho Road sparkling wine from the Bellarine Peninsula. There are plenty of French options, too, however. You can get Taittinger champagne if you wish.
