South Gippsland Highway length
By Australian highway standards, the South Gippsland Highway is relatively short. The official length is 256km, and many visitors will end up driving along at least part of it. This is mainly because it forms part of the route from Melbourne to Phillip Island, one of Victoria’s main tourist hotspots. The Bass Highway branches off the South Gippsland Highway at Lang Lang.
Before then, the South Gippsland Highway passes through Cranbourne and Koo Wee Rup.
South Gippsland Highway towns
By the time the road reaches Lang Lang, it is properly out of suburban Melbourne, and it continues to Korumburra and Leongatha. Here, the Bass Highway rejoins and the Strzelecki Highway heads north towards Morwell.
Next come Meeniyan and Foster, where you’ll branch off if heading to Fish Creek and Tidal River on Wilsons Promontory.
Other Victorian towns on the South Gippsland Highway include Agnes, Welshpool, Yarram and Longford. None are particularly big, and there are no major intersections with the highway – just C roads heading to the coast and inland.
