Anason, Barangaroo: Sydney’s best Turkish restaurant?
Anason at Barangaroo is one of Sydney’s best Turkish restaurants. It works both as a wine and raki bar with meze, or as a pig-out restaurant.
Anason is one of several restaurants that have cropped up at Barangaroo, the new, highly expensive development on Sydney Harbour.
Somer Sivrioglu and Anason, Sydney
So why visit? There are several other restaurants in Barangaroo. Why pick Anason? Well, this is probably the best Turkish restaurant on Sydney Harbour. It’s the baby of Somer Sivrioglu, who has run Efendy in Balmain since 2007. He’s also written a couple of Turkish cookbooks. Analatolia: Adventures in Turkish Cooking came out in 2015, and Anatolia: Adventures in Turkish Eating was published in 2020. He’s also a judge on Masterchef Turkey.
Anason, Sivrioglu’s second Sydney restaurant, opened in Barangaroo in 2016. The aim is to evoke the traditional bars and restaurants of Istanbul – the meyhanes.

Anason menu
The Anason menu focuses on modern Turkish, but it puts strong emphasis on seasonality. The food is meant for sharing, with heavy leanings towards seafood and vegetarian dishes. Traditional Turkish cooking and preparation techniques are used where possible.
How you treat Anason in Barangaroo depends on how hungry you are. It’s either a bar, where you tuck into mezes as you drink, or somewhere for a full, gluttonous food orgy. The more sizable options include the snapper, white bean piyaz, tahini, onion and tomato for $48.
But the ten course feast menu is the one for thorough indulgence. This feast menu costs $118, plus another $42 if you want it pairing with curated Turkish wines.
Those wines are also part of what makes Anason interesting as a bar. You can add the raki, and the range of cocktails to that list. Full menus are available on the restaurant website.
