Where is Point Lowly?

Point Lowly is located to the east of Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. It is at the end of a small peninsula on the western shore of the Spencer Gulf. Point Lowly can be built into a road trip as a short detour on the drive from Port Augusta to Whyalla or Adelaide to Port Lincoln.

How far is Point Lowly from Whyalla?

The Whyalla to Point Lowly drive covers a 35km distance in roughly 29 minutes. From Whyalla, head north along the Lincoln Highway, then turn right down Port Bonython Road.

Point Lowly Beach – is it safe for swimming?

The main attraction in Point Lowly is Point Lowly Beach, which is not patrolled by lifeguards, but has decent facilities. These include cold outdoor showers and disabled access showers. It’s a popular spot for fishing and dolphins are often seen just offshore.

However, there can be dangerous rips at the beach, which swimmers should be aware of before getting in the water.

Swimming with cuttlefish at Point Lowly

Point Lowly is on False Bay, which is famous for its cuttlefish population. If you want to swim with the Giant Australian Cuttlefish, the best spots are just to the east of Point Lowly at Black Point and Stony Point.

Things to do in Point Lowly: Point Lowly Lighthouse

The other main attraction in Point Lowly is the Point Lowly Lighthouse. This 23m tall lighthouse is no longer operational, and visitors aren’t allowed to climb it, but it does make for fabulous photos – particularly if you use it to anchor shots at sunrise and sunset.

Camping at Point Lowly

Most people spending a night or two in Point Lowly will do so at the Point Lowly Campground. This was once a free camping site, but now attracts a token fee in order to manage demand. A degree of self-sufficiency is required – you won’t get powered sites here.

You might, however, get kangaroos – they can often be found hanging out here.
