What are the best things to do in Inverell, NSW?

The best things to do in Inverell, NSW, include the Inverell Pioneer Village, National Transport Museum and Goonoowigal State Conservation Area.

Inverell, NSW, is a moderately large town at the northern end of the New England region. Near the Queensland border, Inverell lies on the Gwydir Highway between Glen Innes and Moree.

This is not a part of the country that most overseas visitors will make it to, but there are a few things to do in Inverell if you happen to be passing through.

Of these Inverell attractions, the Inverell Art Gallery shouldn’t detain you for too long. It’s more of  community hub than visitor attraction. The 94 metre mosaic footpath is the most interesting aspect of this regional gallery.

The Inverell Pioneer Village has a bit more to offer, however. This brings together historic buildings from the town and surrounding areas to create an olde worlde living history museum. You can also go fossicking for sapphires in the pond.

The National Transport Museum, however, doesn’t quite live up to the grand billing. It’s essentially a big collection of old cars and motorbikes.

The best things to do in Inverell are arguably outdoors. The McIlveen Park Lookout on Tabletop Mountain, about 3.5km west of the town, offers great views over Inverell and the mountain ranges in the background. There are picnic areas here, so it’s a good lunch spot.

You can also try the Lake Inverell Picnic Area and Dam to the east. The Barayamal National Park borders the lake, and has a few walking trails to explore.

Just south-east of Inverell is the Goonoowigal State Conservation Area. There are 10km of woodland walking tracks here. Expect wildflowers, small creeks and big granite rocks providing the scenery.
