Delegate, NSW, is a small village with a strange name. It’s in the Snowy Monaro region, just north of the Victorian border.

In fact, Delegate is the closest town in New South Wales to the Black-Allan Line. This is the straight bit of the New South Wales-Victoria border, which stretches from the headwaters of the Murray River to Cape Howe.

The nearest town of any real size to Delegate, NSW, is Bombala – which acts as the regional hub. Bombala is located 36km to the north-east. The name Delegate doesn’t derive from any important delegation, as many people assume. Delegate is an anglicisation of an Aboriginal word meaning One Big Hill.

The one big hill in question is Mt Delegate, the biggest free-standing hill in the Great Dividing Range. Ironically, Mt Delegate is in Victoria, on the other side of the border.

Things to do in Delegate, NSW

Delegate, NSW isn’t really a tourist destination. It is surrounded by grazing land, has an old world vibe about it and is perfectly pleasant. The main attraction, if you can call it that, is the Early Settler’s Hut, about 1km south-west of the village on the Delegate Road. This hut dates back to the 1920s.

Otherwise, top of the list of things to do in Delegate, NSW, is hanging out by the Delegate River. It’s a pretty river, with plenty of good fishing spots along the banks.
