Indented Head, Victoria: Best things to do and attractions

The best things to do in Indented Head, Victoria, include camping in the Anderson Reserve and hiring an e-Bike to explore the Bellarine Peninsula.

Indented Head, Victoria, is a fairly quiet coastal community on the Bellarine Peninsula. It’s about 7km from Portarlington, where the Portarlington ferry arrives from Melbourne.

How did Indented Head get its name?

The town got its name in 1802 when Matthew Flinders spotted it from the Mornington Peninsula on the other side of Port Phillip Bay. As the name suggests, the coastline here is indented.

Indented Head has a series of coastal reserves. And, somewhat unusually for Australia, you’re allowed to camp in some of them.

Camping at Indented Head, Victoria

This foreshore camping means Indented Head is one of the best places in the country for sleeping under the stars, next to the beach. Camping is possible in the Anderson Reserve, Taylor Reserve and Batman Park. For more information on camping at Indented Head, visit the Camping Victoria website.

Another great thing about these foreshore reserves is that they often have playgrounds. Children can swing and slide to their heart’s content at the Anderson Reserve, Taylor Reserve and Point George playgrounds.

Otherwise, conventional tourist attractions are somewhat thin on the ground. Unless you fancy looking out into the bay at the Ozone Shipwreck from 1925, of course.

Things to do in Indented Head, Victoria: E-Bike hire

Other things to do in Indented Head, Victoria, include hiring an e-bike. Bella e-Bike Hire is based here, and rents out e-bikes for $80 a day. If you want one for just half a day, that’s fine – it’ll cost you $80.

Once you’ve got your superpowered wheels, you might like to explore the Bellarine Peninsula wineries. A self-guided Bellarine wine tour can take you to the likes of Scotchmans Hill, Terindah Estate, the Whiskery, Leura Park and the Jack Rabbit Winery.
