Where is Omeo, Victoria?

Omeo, Victoria, is a historic mining town to the west of the Snowy Mountains. It’s primarily a High Country town you’re going to pass through on the Great Alpine Road from Bairnsdale to Bright, Myrtleford or Wangaratta. Either that, or you’ll use it as a base for the ski resorts at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

Things to do in Omeo, Victoria: Oriental Claims Historic Area

But there are a few things to do in Omeo. First up should be the Livingstone Creek Walking Track, which follows Livingstone Creek from central Omeo to the Oriental Claims Historic Area.

The Oriental Claims Historic Area is where gold-mining historically took place in Omeo. It hosted one of the world’s largest gold-sluicing operations, and a few of the relics are still in place. Follow the 2.2km Ah Fong Loop Track while there and you’ll get a sign-based education on life in the goldfields, but there are also plenty of birds and orchids to spot.

Things to do in Omeo town centre

Things to do in Omeo, Victoria, aren’t restricted to the former mining area, however. The town centre is dotted with handsome historic buildings. Take a mooch around the Post Office, Omeo Lockup, Courthouse and Police Stables before getting something to eat at one of the cafés near Livingstone Park. Pippa’s Pantry, the Crazy Cow and the Olde Country Kitchen Café are all sound choices.

Omeo attractions: Kosciuszko Lookout and mountain bike trails

Other attractions near Omeo include the Kosciuszko Lookout, which is both a viewing platform and camping area. On a clear day, you can see Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain. But if it’s a bit overcast, forget about it.

The people who really love Omeo, however, are mountain bikers. A 121km network of mountain bike trails is being constructred around Omeo, all of which will culminate in the town’s Livingstone Park. The mountain bike pump and skills track opened in December 2020, and construction of further tracks is well underway.

The main Omeo accommodation options are the Colonial Motel and the Omeo Motel. Both are pretty good by Australian motel standards.
